NBCHS Senior boys ready for home tournament this weekend

Feb 27, 2025 | 12:00 PM

The North Battleford Comprehensive High School (NBCHS) Vikings Senior boys’ basketball team is hosting their home tournament this weekend and it will bring 12 teams from across the province to come compete and Head Coach Ryley Woiden said it’s something the team has been looking forward too.

“We got the whole school down in the gym coming to watch and it’s going to be really loud, and we’ll have a good introduction and stuff for the boys, they are excited for it, and they love being able to play in front of their fans,” he said.

So far this season, the Vikings have played solidly and are currently the fourth ranked team in their region. They have also put themselves to the test, going up against some top tier competition while attending tournaments in Winnipeg and Saskatoon. The Vikings even beat the #6 ranked team in Manitoba, the Oak Park Raiders back in January at the Winnipeg Invitational Tournament.

Now, coming into this weekend, the expectation for the team is to perform and hopefully grab a medal, said Woiden.

“We’ve been kind of up and down throughout the year, but our goal is to perform well in the pool play and that we’ll be playing on the winner side. We could potentially have a rematch with PA Peacock on Saturday if things go as planned. Right now, they’re ranked number one, and we are 1-1 against them this year, so it would be a grudge match and good game for our ranking” Woiden said.

The Vikings have had a solid core group of players that they have relied on this season as well as some great younger players too, but Woiden mentioned that there has been one player on the court who has really taken charge.

“Our lead guard is Eston Glass, he’s a grade 12 and he played on the Team Saskatchewan Provincial team this summer and went to the national tournament. He’s our leading scorer and he does a lot for us out there. Then we’ve got a couple other guys that are great as well, plus a 6’5 grade 10 and he’s been really strong for us with some of the other bigs too,” Woiden said.

The Vikings first game of the tournament is Friday, Feb 28 at 11:00 a.m. followed by a game later on in the day at 2:30 p.m.

NBCHS will also be hosting basketball regionals this year on March 14 and 15, 2025.
