Proud American wrestler challenges Canada in steel cage

Feb 21, 2025 | 3:00 PM

A professional wrestler whose character waves the American flag when he makes his way to the wrestling ring feels Canada would benefit greatly from accepting President Trump’s offer and becoming the 51st state.

Danny Duggan is part of Canadian Wrestling Elite’s (CWE) latest tour through Saskatchewan which includes stops at Big River First Nation on Sunday and Prince Albert on Monday at Plaza 88. Acknowledging the recent tension towards Americans at other sporting events, and even himself during recent shows in Regina and Estevan, Duggan told paNOW he is neither bothered by it or even concerned for his own safety.

“In theory, I should be given the climate that we’re living in, but let’s be honest Canadians are cowards and I prove that each and every time I get in the ring with one,” he said.

In November 2022, Duggan moved from Winnipeg to the U.S., and he said it’s a move he does not regret, claiming America’s finally “gotten their act together” and has a President in charge who is doing the right thing for the people and for freedom and democracy.

Duggan added his belief the recent animosity directed towards the States, has less to do with its President’s recent actions and more to do with ignorance and jealousy.

“You have people here in Canada with Stockholm syndrome and they don’t realize they are being abused and they think the American people are the enemy,” he said.

Introducing the steel cage

As part of CWE’s upcoming card, a 3,000 lb., 15 foot high steel structure will be erected for the main event. Danny Duggan who is challenging Central Canadian Champion CAM!!ikaze noted the cage is both intimidating and unforgiving.

“Normally when we’re travelling Canada, for myself personally I’m miserable just being in this country on its own, but now I’m miserable, beaten, bruised, welted, sore, and everything in between while being here having to compete inside the steel cage as often as I have over the last couple days on this tour.”

On a more serious note, Duggan acknowledged how impressed he was at the growth over the past 15 years of the crowd in Prince Albert, even if they boo or cheer.

“You know we started doing events in Prince Albert, in front of very small crowds and some very small halls you could can barely fit the ring into, and now each and every time the event is sold out and there is standing room only. This one’s gonna be the biggest one yet,” he said.

In addition to what’s expected to be an incredible main event, CWE’s 16th anniversary tour show will also include Canadian wrestling legend René Duprée. During his time with WWE, Duprée won multiple tag team championships. He’s worked for All Japan Pro Wrestling and is a two-time GHC Tag Team Champion.

“I encourage anybody that hasn’t got a ticket to go out and do so because the steel cage is coming and not only do you get to see the spectacle and the excitement of a steel cage match, you’re gonna see yours truly, an American hero, hotshot Danny Duncan return to Prince Albert, compete in the main event and show you what your dominance looks like when I recapture the CWE Central Canadian championship from CAM!!ikaze,” Duggan said.

On Monday, doors open at Plaza 88 at 6:30 p.m. and the matches will start at 7 p.m. Tickets are still available online or at the door.

Following its show in Prince Albert, CWE then heads to Saskatoon on Tuesday, and Yorkton on Wednesday.
