North Stars get statement win against Humboldt

Feb 15, 2025 | 2:02 AM

The Battlefords North Stars were at the Access Communications Centre last night and got a big statement win, beating the Humboldt Broncos 5-1.

In the first period, the North Stars came out firing on all cylinders and opened up the scoring just over four minutes into the period with a goal from Logan Goodwin, his first of the season, to take a 1-0 lead.

As the period went on, the North Stars continued to control the pace of the game, locking down the Broncos is their own zone. This resulted in another goal, coming from captain Jackson Allan, his ninth of the season, to extend the lead to 2-0 going into the second.

Coming out for the second, there was no slowing down for Battlefords and right away they found the back of the net again, this time by Rylan Williams on a great cross crease pass from Jordan Grill, making it 3-0 early in the period.

Throughout the rest of the second, the North Stars put non-stop pressure on the Broncos, then just before the midway point of the period, Nikita Ivashchenko struck the nylon, making it his eighth game in a row with goal and further increasing the lead to 4-0.

Even though with the commanding lead, Battlefords still didn’t take their foot off the gas and nearing the end of the second, they lit the lamp once more on a goal by Jace Rask to make it 5-0 going into the third.

Then for the third period, the North Stars continued to play solid, making it hard for Humboldt to get anything going. Eventually though, the Broncos were able to grab one goal in the final five minutes of the game but the lead was just too much to overcome and the North Stars took the win 5-1.

The North Stars outshot the Broncos 42 to 28, went 0/3 on the powerplay and stopped Humboldt two out of three times on the penalty kill.

Justen Maric was great in between the pipes, stopping 27/28 shots in the game.

After the win, Battlefords record improves to 23-18-3-2 on the season, bumping them up to sixth overall in the standings with 51 points.

The North Stars now head to Humboldt today to take on the Broncos again for the eighth and final time this regular season.
