Wilkie and NBCHS sweep their way to victory at District’s

There were 15 teams gathered in Unity this week for the Battle West District Senior Curling championship and after a few days of strong competition, the North Battleford Comprehensive High School (NBCHS) took home gold in both the boys and girls divisions while Wilkie took home gold in mixed doubles.

Despite some teams not being able to attend due to the weather at the time, Unity curling coach, Kyla Snell said that it was a still great turnout.

“We had a great fan base, lots of parents and grandparents were there cheering on their curlers and that’s always great, to see people come and give support,” said Snell.

Boys Curling

For the boys bonspiel, there were seven teams in attendance and after the first few draws, it came down to NBCHS Team 1 versus John Paul II Collegiate (JPII) and NBCHS Team 2 versus Medstead Team 2 in the semi-final. Both matches were close, but it was both NBCHS teams who took the win to move on and play each other in the gold medal game.

NBCHS Curling Coach, Evan Reid said this matchup was a first for him, but it made for an exciting game.

“In all my years of coaching, I’ve had two teams in the same bonspiel before, but I’ve never had my teams playing off against each other. There’s a bit of pride on the line and it was interesting because one team is comprised of some of the older players and the other team is all Grade nine,” he said.

Ultimately, the younger NBCHS Team 2 was victorious, giving NBCHS Team 1 the silver medal and Spiritwood got the second silver medal.

Girls Curling

In the girls bonspiel, there were only three teams that made it out, so in the first round NBCHS took on Medstead with the winner advancing to the final. NBCHS beat Medstead, putting them through to the gold medal game, where they went up against a strong Spiritwood team.

Even though NBCHS was coming off of a provincial silver medal from last year, Reid said he knew the competition was going to be tight going into the final.

“The girls team has been together for a couple of years and in the last two years they won provincial silver, but there’s always good competition out of Spiritwood and they had a very strong team. There’s nothing that’s going to be handed to us and it doesn’t matter if you were the silver winner last year or not, we had to play well,” said Reid.

In the end, it was one of the closest games throughout the few days, but NBCHS pulled out the victory to get the district gold.

Mixed Doubles

Then in Mixed Doubles, there were five teams competing and it all came down to McLurg High School out of Wilkie taking on Unity Team 1 in the final.

McLurg ended up coming out on top to win the gold, giving Unity Team 1 the silver with Unity Team 2 getting bronze.

Now, the top two teams from each division will advance to the regional championship, which takes place Feb. 28 to Mar. 1 in North Battleford (Boys, Girls) and Unity (Open Doubles, Open Mixed).
