Extreme cold warnings across Sask. with frigid weather expected all week

Feb 10, 2025 | 1:52 PM

It’s a good excuse to snuggle up beside your special someone this Valentine’s week.

The province is in a deep freeze that isn’t going anywhere soon, with much of Saskatchewan under an Extreme Cold Warning.

Environment and Climate Change Canada Meteorologist Stephen Berg told northeastNOW the cold snap will last through the rest of the week, and possibly into early next week as well.

The normal high for this time of year is around –9 C with the overnight low averaging about –20 C. Berg said that’s a far cry from what we’ll be seeing over the next week.

“Given the highs into the minus 20 to 25 range and overnight lows dipping from minus 28 to minus 34…[you’re] looking at temperatures about 15 degrees below normal.”

Berg said when the weather is this cold, it doesn’t take much wind to make it dangerous. A wind of 15 km/h with temperatures at –30 C would make windchills in the extreme range of –40 C or lower.

“In those types of situations, it’s important to make sure that you stay warm, find shelter if you can,” Berg said. “If you have to work outside, to be bundling up very well and make sure you take some warm breaks and keep hydrated.”

The cold weather is expected to alleviate around Monday or Tuesday. Berg said there may be a day or two in this cold stretch that don’t qualify for an Extreme Cold Warning, but it will stay well below normal for another week.

Berg encouraged people to stay warm and stay safe during this cold snap.

“It’s pretty dangerous with frostbite and hypothermia risks in the high to very high range,” said Berg. “You can get frozen skin within about 10 minutes if [it’s] exposed.

Fortunately, we won’t be spending much time in the cold weather shovelling. Berg said significant snowfall isn’t expected with the system, as the air can’t hold much moisture in the cold temperatures.
