Vikings Senior Girls home tournament underway this weekend

The North Battleford Comprehensive High School (NBCHS) Vikings Senior Girls basketball team is hosting their home tournament this weekend and it all got kicked off early today at 1:15 p.m. with NBCHS taking on Wynyard.

Vikings head coach, Mike Hummeny said that this tournament is something that has brought a lot of buzz around the school and that they are expecting a big turnout in the crowd.

“We don’t often play home games, so the home tournaments are kind of a big deal, it should be a packed house today and it’s something the girls are looking forward to,” he said.

Coming into this weekend, the Vikings hold a 13-8 record on the season and hope to see that improve. As for the tournament format, it will be similar to last year’s home tournament where they play just three round-robin games throughout the weekend without any real standings, but against some very good competition.

The tournament is bringing in nine teams from across Saskatchewan and Humenny said that the purpose of it is to prepare the girls for regionals and get some tough games in.

“The goal with this tournament at this time of year is when we talked to the coaches, we wanted to bring in some different teams, bring people in to watch and play three good games each…it’s a very strong pool,” Humenny said.

With the entire team returning from last year and the season coming to an end, the expectations are high for the Vikings but even with the team succeeding there is still work to be done.

“I think we’re starting to come into our own here as the season is getting close to the end. We didn’t graduate any players from last year, we returned all the players, but we got some work to do here heading into regionals as our expectations are high for this group… the team qualified for Hoopla last year and that’s one of our goals this year,” said Humenny.

The other two games for the Sr. Girls will be tonight at 6:00 p.m. against Yorkton and then tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 8 at 6:00 p.m. against St. Joseph’s from Saskatoon.
