4-2 over Hounds

Win in Wilcox put North Stars back in fifth

Feb 6, 2025 | 9:21 AM

After beating the Notre Dame Hounds 4-2 last night at the Duncan McNail Arena in Wilcox in the second game of a back-to-back, the Battlefords North Stars have now regained their spot at fifth overall in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.

In the first period, both teams came out playing solid but it was the Hounds who opened up the scoring with a goal on a two-on-one rush to take an early 1-0 lead. Even though the North Stars started to take control as the period went on and found some good scoring chances, they still couldn’t strike the nylon and went into the second period trailing.

However, it didn’t take long in the second for the North Stars to get going, as just under a minute into the period they got their first goal coming from Anthony Campbell, his 19th of the season to tie up the game 1-1. Despite giving Notre Dame three powerplay opportunities throughout the rest of the period, the North Stars still stayed strong, killing them all off and found themselves another goal from Sebastian Miles, to go up 2-1.

Nearing the final seconds of the period though, the Hounds were able to get one more goal to tie things up 2-2 going into the third.

Then coming out for the third, the North Stars yet again took almost no time to retake the lead as they grabbed a powerplay goal from Nikita Ivashchenko to make it 3-2. As the period continued on, Battlefords really started to dominate the Hounds, only allowing four shots in the period and eventually got one more goal on an empty netter from Rylan Williams to win the game 4-2.

The North Stars outshot the Hounds 36 to 21, went 1/4 on the powerplay and stopped Notre Dame all six times on the penalty kill.

Justen Maric had another outstanding performance, stopping 34/36 shots in the win.

Battlefords now sit with 49 points on the season with a 22-17-3-2 record, bumping them back up to the fifth spot in the standings.

The North Stars have one more game this week and that’s this Saturday, Feb. 8 as they head to the Westland Arena in Yorkton to take on the Terriers for the fourth and final time this season with puck drop at 7:00 p.m.
