North Stars’ struggles continue in Humboldt

Feb 2, 2025 | 6:50 AM

It was another tough game for the Battlefords North Stars Saturday night, losing 10-3 to the Humboldt Broncos on the road to get handed their fourth loss in a row.

Right out the gate, the North Stars faced some struggles as the Broncos got three goals within the first eight minutes of the game to take an early 3-0 lead.

The North Stars did answer back though with a powerplay goal from Anthony Campbell to close the gap and make it 3-1. Shortly after, Humboldt scored again to extend the lead to 4-1 going into the intermission.

For the second period, Battlefords started to get some momentum and grabbed the first goal of the period early on, again coming from Anthony Campbell on the powerplay to close the gap to 4-2.

However, the Broncos fired back right away, getting a goal of their own to make it 5-2.

For the rest of the period, it was a lot of back and forth and despite having some good powerplay chances, the North Stars still couldn’t find the back of net. Then in the last couple minutes of the second period, Battlefords finally got the spark they needed with a shorthanded goal coming from Josh Knittig to lessen the deficit to 5-3 going into the third.

It seemed like the tides were turning in favour of the North Stars, but in the third period is when things began to go down hill. The Broncos started to get odd man rush after odd man rush and the North Stars couldn’t go anything to stop it. The goals continued to pile up and by the end of the period, the Broncos added another five goals to go on and win the game with a final score of 10-3.

The North Stars got outshot 47 to 39, went 2/6 on the powerplay and stopped Humboldt three out of five times on the penalty kill.

In his first game back since Dec. 7, Connor Baumbach stopped 30/39 shots. Thomas Samborksi played the final seven minutes of the game, stopping 7/8 shots.

Battlefords record is now at 20-17-3-2 on the season for 45 points, dropping them to 7th overall in league, just two points ahead of the Kindersley Klippers.

The North Stars will have a two day break before they get back in action and make their way to Davidson to take on the Notre Dame Hounds on Tuesday, Feb. 4th with puck drop at 7:00 p.m.
