Extreme cold warnings issue for Meadow Lake and Far North

Feb 2, 2025 | 10:15 AM

Extremely cold wind chill values near -45 C are expected Sunday night and Monday morning.

Environment Canada said some moderation will occur during daytime hours, overnight and early morning but wind chill values near minus -45 C are likely to remain into Tuesday.

An extreme cold warning was issued Sunday morning for parts of northwest Saskatchewan including Meadow Lake, Lloydminster and Kindersley. Saskatoon is also included. Communities in the province’s north like Wolloston Lake and Fon du Lac are also being warned about the frigid temperatures.

Environment Canada said extreme cold puts everyone at risk, particularly young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter.

The warning said to watch for cold related symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes. Dress warmly. Dress in layers that you can remove if you get too warm. The outer layer should be wind resistant. Cover up.

Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill and if it’s too cold for you to be outside, its too cold for your pets.

Highway conditions appeared to be improving late Sunday morning. The Highway Hotline showed dozens of snowplows making work on highways that were earlier labelled with ‘Travel Not Recommended’ warnings. Motorists can access information on road conditions and track which roads have been plowed, salted, and/or sanded within the last two hours on the Highway Hotline.

On Friday and Saturday, blowing snow advisories covered a large swathe of the Saskatchewan and closed a few roads in the province, including Highway 1 on both days.
