For the first time this season, the Battlefords North Stars find themselves on a three game losing streak after falling to the Humboldt Broncos 5-2 Friday night at the Access Communications Centre.

In the first period, the North Stars struggled to find the back of net and it was the Broncos who opened up the scoring with back to back goals from Jacob Strizzi late in the period take a 2-0 lead going into the intermission.

Coming out for the second period, it was Humboldt again who opened up the scoring just four minutes in to make it 3-0. Despite having two powerplay opportunities in the period, the North Stars still couldn’t seem to get any goals and went into the third scoreless.

Then in the third period, Battlefords finally seemed to get some momentum and got their first goal of the game, coming from Anthony Campbell to make it 3-1. Following that, the North Stars were able to generate some more offence and eventually lit the lamp again on a goal from Colton Getzlaff to close the gap 3-2.

As the period went on, the North Stars did have some good chances but it didn’t result in any goals. So as time was winding down, Battlefords pulled their goalie for an extra attacker in attempt to tie the game, but Humboldt was able to gain possession and scored two empty net goals go up 5-2 and ultimately win the game.

The North Stars outshot the Broncos 37 to 31, went 0/6 on the powerplay but did stop Humboldt all three times on the penalty kill.

Justen Maric stopped 26 out of 29 shots and made some big saves late in the contest to keep the North Stars in the game.

Battlefords record is now at 20-16-3-2 on the season, still keeping them at 5th overall in the league with 45 points, but they are now just three points out of 8th place in the standings.

The North Stars will need to have a big bounce back game tonight when they take on the Broncos again at the Elgar Petersen Arena in Humboldt.

Puck drop is at 7:00 p.m. with the Napa Auto Parts North Stars Hockey Broadcast starting at 6:30 p.m. with the Ultra Print pregame show on CJNB/CJNS.
