North Stars’ long stretch comes to end with loss to Terriers

In the final game of their six games in nine days stretch, the Battlefords North Stars lost 10-5 to the Yorkton Terriers Sunday night at the Westland Arena in Yorkton.

The game was opened by the North Stars just before the half way point of the first period with a goal from Gavin Granger on a shot from the blueline to give Battlefords a 1-0 lead.

The Terriers responded by putting on a fury of shots and were able to answer back with a goal only a few minutes after to tie it 1-1 going into the second.

For the second, the North Stars started to breakdown defensively in their own zone, giving Yorkton lots of good looks which resulted in the Terriers scoring four goals in a row to take a 5-1 lead midway through the second.

However, the North Stars didn’t let this discourage them as they continued to play hard and create rushes and eventually they were able to respond with two goals coming from Treycen Wuttunee and Jace Rask to take some momentum and make it 5-3 going into the third.

In the third period, both team traded goals back and forth as Yorkton tried to pull away scoring two in the first five minutes but Battlefords answered back both times with goals from Elijah Anderson and Treycen Wuttunee making it 7-5.

The North Stars continued to battle throughout the rest of the period to try and close the gap but they just couldn’t seem to generate any offence. Eventually Yorkton was able to rally to seal the deal near the end of the period and got three more goals to win the game 10-5.

The North Stars got outshot 53 to 31, went 1/4 on the powerplay and stopped the Terriers four out of five times on the penalty kill.

Justen Maric stopped 43/53 shots in the game.

Battlefords are now 19-12-3-2 on the season, putting them at 5th overall in the league with 43 points.

The North Stars get a few days off before they are back at home on Friday, Jan.17 to take on the Humboldt Broncos at the Access Communications Centre with puck drop at 7:30 p.m.
