North Stars cash in against the Millionaires

After a bump in the road on Wednesday against Notre Dame, the North Stars got back on track Saturday as they downed the Melville Millionaires 3-1 on the road.

The North Stars kicked things off early in the first with a goal from Sebastian Miles in the opening five minutes. Battlefords continued to put on the pressure throughout the period, which resulted in Anthony Campbell’s 13th of the season to double the lead to 2-0 going into the second.

There, the North Stars continued to heave away and find good looks on net and managed to convert again just after the half way mark of the frame, this time on a high slot shot from Colton Getzlaff, making it 3-0.

However, the Millionaires didn’t cave and after a few good consecutive rushes, Melville found a goal to close the gap and make it 3-1 going into the third.

The Mills really started to kick it into gear and controlled a lot of the puck possession, but the North Stars played solid in their own zone while Justen Maric made some big saves to keep them scoreless mid way through the period.

Then near the end of the third, Melville really put on the pressure as the North Stars found themselves on the receiving end of a six-on-three, as the Mills pulled their net-minder for an extra attacker while on a two-man advantage. Even then, Melville still couldn’t find the back of the net and the North Stars took the game to the buzzer to win 3-1.

The North Stars got outshot 33-29 and Justen Maric saved 32 of 33 shots in the game.

Battlefords now improves to 19-11-3-2 on the season for 43 points, tying them at fourth overall in the league alongside the Yorkton Terriers. The North Stars have a chance to break that tie as they take on the Terriers Sunday at the Westland Arena in Yorkton with puck drop at 3:00 p.m.
