The Battlefords North Stars took their first loss of the new year Wednesday night at the Access Communications Centre as they lost 5-3 to the Notre Dame Hounds.

Notre Dame got a goal nearing the midway point of the first period to take a 1-0 lead.

In the second period, Battlefords was able to answer back early on with a goal of their own, coming from Brad Nienaber on the powerplay to tie the game 1-1.

Throughout the rest of the second period, both teams were able to find the back of the net but it was the North Stars who took the lead after back to back goals from Colton Getzlaff and Elijah Anderson to go up 3-2.

However, in the final minute of the second, the Hounds had a huge burst of momentum and struck the nylon two more times to take a 4-3 lead going in to the intermission.

Coming out for the third, the North Stars eagerly tried to tie up the game, putting on a fury of shots and getting some good offensive rushes. But despite outshooting the Hounds 19-3 in the third, they couldn’t light the lamp and the Hounds sealed the deal with an empty netter to take the game 5-3.

The North Stars outshot the Hounds 42 to 29, went 1/4 on the powerplay and stopped Notre Dame four out of five times on the penalty kill.

Thomas Samborski got his first start in the SJHL, stopping 22/26 shots.

Battlefords record is now at 18-11–3-2 on the season for 41 points, putting them at 5th overall in the league.

The North Stars get back in action this Saturday as they head to Melville to take on the Melville Millionaires at the CN Community Centre.
