Bombers top North Stars in first meeting of the season

Dec 14, 2024 | 9:50 AM

The Battlefords North Stars were at the Access Communications Centre on Friday night and ended up falling 4-1 to the Flin Flon Bombers in their first matchup of the season.

In the first period, the North Stars struggled to get things going and it was the Bombers who opened up the scoring with an early goal to take a 1-0 lead.

As the period went on, Flin Flon continued to put on pressure and scored another goal to make it 2-0.

The North Stars had a few good chances to try and get on the board in the first but Flin Flon played solid defensively and outshot the Battlefords 16-4 going into the second.

Coming out for the second period, the North Stars still couldn’t seem to find momentum and the Bombers were able to score again to make it 3-0 midway through the period.

Then the North Stars finally found a spark on a goal from Jace Rask nearing the end of the period to make it 3-1 going into the third.

In the third, the North Stars came out playing hard and had some good chances but they still couldn’t strike the nylon and yet again the Bomber found the back of the net to seal the deal and win the game 4-1.

The North Stars got outshot 43 to 21, went 0/4 on the powerplay and stopped the Bombers two out of three times on the penalty kill.

Justen Maric played solid, stopping 39 of 43 shots and made some great saves in the process.

The North Stars record now sits at 14-8-3-2 for 33 points, making them tied for third overall in the league.

The North Stars take on the Bombers again on Saturday at the Access Communications Centre with puck drop at 7:30 p.m.

Tune into the game with the Napa Auto Parts North Stars Hockey on CJNB/CJNS. Ultra Print pregame show starts at 7:00 p.m.
