North Stars grab one point over Red Wings

It wasn’t a win but the Battlefords North Stars were still able to walk away with one point last night after falling 5-4 to the Weyburn Red Wings in a shootout.

The game got opened up by the Red Wings in the first period with two early goals for them to take a 2-0 lead.

Battlefords was able to answer back with one of their own, coming from Sebastian Miles, his first of the season, to make it 2-1.

Then just as the period was coming to an end, Weyburn stacked up another goal, extending the lead 3-1 going into the intermission.

For the second period, it was all North Stars as they came out hot, scoring the two lone goals of the period, coming from Linken Fischer and Nikita Ivashchenko to tie the game 3-3.

In the third period, it seemed like the North Stars had the momentum but it was the Red Wings who took back the lead, scoring an early goal to make it 4-3.

Then throughout the rest of the period, the North Stars had lots of chances but still couldn’t find the back of the net.

But then with just under a minute left in the period, the North Stars pulled their goalie for an extra attacker and it was Anthony Campbell who lit the lamp to tie the game 4-4 and force overtime.

In overtime, the North Stars started off with a man advantage due to a Weyburn penalty, but still after five minutes neither team could score so the game called for a shootout.

Unfortunately, in the shootout all three Battlefords shooters couldn’t strike the nylon and it was Weyburn’s Ethan Dekay who found the back of the net to win the game 5-4.

The North Stars outshot Weyburn 45 to 40, went 0/5 on the powerplay and stopped Weyburn 5/6 times on the penalty kill.

The North Stars record now sits at 13-7-3-2 with 31 points for second overall in the league.

They will have a chance at redemption as they play against Weyburn again tonight at the Access Communications Centre with puck drop at 7:30 p.m.
