Tough night for the North Stars in Melfort

Nov 30, 2024 | 6:37 AM

Things definitely didn’t go as expected for the Battlefords North Stars last night as they lost 8-1 to the Melfort Mustangs at the Northern Lights Palace in Melfort.

The North Stars struggles began right out the gate as Melfort scored two goals in the first three minutes of the game to take an early 2-0 lead.

Battlefords was able to get some momentum though as they found the back of the net with a goal from Nikita Ivashchenko to make it 2-1 going into the intermission.

Coming out for the second period, Melfort started to take over, scoring two goals and holding the North Stars to zero, making it 4-1 going into the third.

Despite the score, there was still a hope that the North Stars were going to make a comeback as they had some good rushes and chances early on in third.

But then the Mustangs kicked it into an extra gear, finding good look after good look and scoring goal after goal. After everything was said and done, the Mustangs scored four goals in the third period to win the game 8-1.

The North Stars got outshot 42 to 24, went 0/2 on the powerplay and stopped Melfort all three times on the penalty kill.

Justen Maric stopped 31/38 shots and Connor Baumbach stopped 3/4 shots as he stepped into the game for the final 7 minutes.

The Battlefords North Stars have the rest of the weekend off before they head to Melville on Tuesday, Dec. 3 to take on the Melville Millionaires for the first time this season with puck drop at 7:00 p.m.
