The Battlefords dig out from season’s first snowfall

The sun may have finally decided to make an appearance but the cleanup from this past weekend’s snow continues.

According to Candace Toma, public and intergovernmental relations coordinator for the City of North Battleford, it’s been a lot of work for the road crews.

“They typically follow the same pattern year to year on the snow removal priority routes,” she said.

“They have been doing that but actually during the snow removal events yesterday, they actually worked fairly fast and got through all of the priority one areas.”

“They’re working through it as absolutely best that they can but certainly crews were out making quick work of the snow removal.”

According to the Town of Battleford’s Snow Removal Bylaw No. 1-2022, the town does not begin any clearing snow until after it has stopped. Once it has however, then it too will be sorted into priority zones. Priority one focuses on hills, district and business areas. Priority two are avenues and priority three are residential streets.

battlefordsNOW has reached out to the Town of Battleford’s public works department and is awaiting a response to its current status.

Meanwhile, the city said typically during a “normal storm dump” the priority two streets are cleared within seven days and priority three zones – those that are low traffic or side streets will be cleared.

“Those collector streets and then of course removing any access snow from the priority streets will be the main goals for the next day or so,” she said.

According to the Town of Battleford website, the town will “clear snow from alleys and lanes on an as-needed basis providing manpower and equipment is available.”

The bylaw goes on to say that clearing of priority two and three areas may be delayed a day because of garbage and recycling pick-up.
