‘A confident voice’ : Council candidate focuses on fiscal responsibility and growth

A journeyman is determined to bring a confident voice focused on fiscal responsibility and business growth to city council.

Born and raised in North Battleford, Rodney Fedler owned Fedler Electric until he passed on the business to his nephew in 2023.

Having witnessed what he calls the city’s ‘decline’ over the years, he saw the need to step up.

“We always used to have beautifully manicured areas with flowers. It was like we had a beautiful, beautiful community forever, and I just don’t see that anymore,” Fedler said. “I just want to help push it back into a place where people drive through and think to themselves, ‘You know, this would be a beautiful place to live.’”

With nearly four decades of experience in the construction industry, he is confident in managing future projects and maintenance costs effectively, ensuring taxpayers receive the best value for their dollar. In doing so, he aims to have all infrastructure budgets finalized and ready for release at the start of the bidding season in April, allowing the city to secure the best deals possible.

“Because if you can save 10 per cent, that’s 10 per cent we can spend on somewhere else, right? I’ve been around the construction community enough that there is just a little area I’m hoping I can help the council to save a little bit of money for the city,” he noted.

Alongside keeping the city’s spending in check, Fedler understands that business growth is one of the foundations for prosperity blooms. If elected, he hopes to contribute his ideas to help the city increase its image for potential investors.

“Whether that’s through incentives [or] taxes, all that has to be looked at, and also you have to make sure that our city is attractive and have the right services for the young families that are going to come into those businesses, and that’s the only way we’re going to be able to grow as a community,” he explained.

Looking ahead, he intends to be a strong advocate for the people, committing to speak up whenever he believes the council is heading in the wrong direction or making unwise spending decisions.

“My biggest contribution to the city is a confident voice,” Fedler stated.

Municipal election day is Nov. 13. Other confirmed candidates include Alvin Baptiste, Greg Lightfoot, Ross MacAngus , Donald Meriam, Mercy George, Kent Lindgren, Dennis Mercer, Bill (Thomas) Ironstand, Alan Wiese, Dan Suberlak, Darryl Williams and Warren Williams.
