North Stars suffer tough OT loss to Notre Dame

Nov 2, 2024 | 11:36 AM

In their fourth meeting of the season, the Battlefords North Stars fell to Notre Dame Hounds in an overtime heartbreaker at the Access Communications Centre on Friday.

The North Stars came out strong getting two goals in the first period from Elijah Anderson and Nikita Ivashchenko to take a 2-0 lead going into the first intermission.

In the second period, the North Stars continued to control the game, owning most of the puck possession and stopping Notre Dame from finding good quality shots. The North Stars were even able to find another goal at the midway point of the period from Josh Knittig to take a 3-0 lead.

But nearing the end of the second, the Hounds finally found some momentum with a goal of their own from DJ Freigang to close the gap and make it 3-1 going into the third.

There, the North Stars slowed down their play and the Hounds continued to fight back, getting another goal, this time from Liam Hunks to make it a one goal game.

In the final moments, it seemed like the North Star had sealed the deal, but the Hounds pulled their goalie to gain an extra attacker which led to them getting the game tying goal with just 14 seconds left, coming from Vincent Palmarin to send the game to overtime.

In the extra period, Battlefords had a hard time finding good shots as they only registered one on net. Eventually, this led to a good offensive attack from Notre Dame resulting in the game winning goal by Hunks to win the contest 4-3.

The North Stars and Hounds had even shots throughout the game, both getting 30. Battlefords went 1/3 on the power play while stopping Notre Dame two out of three times on the penalty kill.

Justen Maric stopped 26 of 30 shots in the game.

The North Stars will have a shot at revenge as they take on the Hounds again tonight at the Access Communications Centre. Puck drop at 7:30 p.m.
