It was a great showing for all the volleyball teams at John Paul II Collegiate this past weekend as the Senior Girls, Senior Boys, Junior Girls and Junior Boys all placed very good in their respective competitions.

The Senior Girls volleyball team played in a tournament at St. Joseph’s High School in Saskatoon and ended up second place in their pool for the round robin, winning all but one game.

In the playoffs, they took on Wakaw in the first round and beat them 25-18 and 25-17. This sent them into the semi-finals where they played Holy Cross and played an incredible game, winning 25-21 and 25-22.

They then advanced to the finals where they took on a very good Warman team. It was a close game, but in the end the girls ended falling short, losing the first two sets to get silver in the tournament.

Head Coach of the JPII Senior Girls team, Quin Baynham said this was another good tournament for the team.

“There are a lot of 5A teams that we beat and being a 4A school, it was just really encouraging that we can compete in higher level and we had a lot of teams that were they were impressed with us. So, it was a good tournament, and I am also very happy and impressed with our team.”

The Senior Boys volleyball team also had a solid weekend as they finished third overall at a tournament in Moose Jaw.

After finishing first in their pool, winning all three games, they advanced to the playoff pool where they took on Vanier in the first game and found success, winning two sets to one.

Then in the second playoff pool matchup, the boys ended up facing Peacock, which they won 25-12 and 25-11.

They did lose in the third match of the playoff pool to Greenall, but still qualified and made it to the semi-finals.

In the semi-finals the team took on Rouleau, it was a tough game and the Crusaders played hard but unfortunately didn’t come away with the win, but still placed third overall in the standings.

“It was a solid weekend for us. We had a full squad which we haven’t had throughout the whole year because we have so many multi-sport athletes. It’s always a very important tournament for us to be able to play down south as a 4A team, so this was a great weekend for crusader volleyball, that’s for sure,” said Shelly Fransoo, head coach of the JPII Senior Boys volleyball team.

On top of the success of the Senior teams, the Junior Boys and Junior Girls team both finished first in their conference playoffs as well.
