Become a Registered Nurse in North Battleford

Oct 20, 2024 | 6:00 AM

Dr. Eli Ahlquist (BSN’04) is president & CEO of North West College, University of Saskatchewan (USask) College of Nursing alumnus, and a proud registered nurse.

When Dr. Ahlquist was studying to complete his Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree, he had the choice to study in Saskatoon, Prince Albert, or Regina.

Now in 2024, students interested in pursuing nursing in Saskatchewan have the opportunity to complete their entire BSN degree in 10 locations, including North Battleford.

“The partnership between North West College and USask Nursing to offer the complete Bachelor of Science in Nursing program in North Battleford is a significant step forward in the North West College mission to provide educational opportunities that meet the unique needs in our community. It is a win-win situation for both students and the region’s health care sector.”

Working hand-in-hand, North West College and USask Nursing are delivering the BSN program at North West College and students have the opportunity to complete their entire undergraduate nursing degree without having to relocate to a larger urban centre.

The USask College of Nursing Learn Where You Live model has proven successful at other distributed sites in La Ronge, Île-à-la-Crosse, and Yorkton. Since the first students entered the BSN program in La Ronge and Île-à-la-Crosse in September 2012, 68 nursing students completed their degree in northern Saskatchewan. Since starting the program in Yorkton in 2014, 81 students have graduated.

“September 3rd was an exciting day for us, as we welcomed the first Bachelor of Science in Nursing students at North West College” said Dr. Ahlquist.

“Our campus and community offers unique opportunities for these students, including more affordable housing and smaller class sizes.”

“These nursing students will be learning in a recently renovated modern, state-of-the-art lab with enhanced technology, ensuring students receive a high-quality education that supports the development of the required entry-level competencies for registered nurses.”

“The students will benefit from the teaching of experienced faculty from both institutions dedicated to providing quality nursing education and mentoring.”

When nursing students complete their degree in their community, the majority of graduates stay and practice there.

“By offering the BSN program in North Battleford, we are not only giving students the opportunity to learn where they live, but we are increasing the chance these students will work as registered nurses in our community afterwards,” adds Dr. Ahlquist.

“We look forward to seeing where the Class of 2027 Bachelor of Science in Nursing graduates will work upon becoming licensed as registered nurses.”

“By expanding access to registered nursing education, we aim to address the increasing health care needs of the region and contribute to the growth and stabilization of the nursing workforce.”
