City council candidate focuses on North Battleford’s image

Knowing that the younger generations are stepping back from North Battleford, Dennis Mercer was fueled to help the city become a promising place for youngsters in this city council run.

“I believe it can be done to really enhance the image of North Battleford and its desirability,” said Mercer.

During a conversation with his son about plans after graduation, his son shared that none of his classmates wanted to move to North Battleford to start their careers, which sparked his motivation to take action, as he had always viewed the city as a great place to ‘sink roots in.’

Mercer has dedicated the past two decades to teaching Christian ethics at John Paul II Collegiate. He also served as the chairperson for the Teachers of Religion and Christian Ethics. Additionally, he is an executive at the Battleford Sailing Club. Throughout his career, he has coached numerous sports teams and facilitated various school clubs.

Alongside his educator’s chapter, he had also served as a grand knight of the local Knights of Columbus.

With his extensive experience serving the community and educating the new generation, he believes he can bring the team-building, communications, and administrative skills he acquired throughout the years to the councils and contribute to developing plans that could uplift the city.

To turn his vision into reality, he said he understands the importance of being a student this time around, to learn and uplift others if he is elected to the council.

“It’s remarkable what can be accomplished when individual egos can be set aside,” Mercer said. “That’s how teams are built, and that’s how accomplishments are done.”

In addition to exploring ways to uplift the city, he will also focus on strengthening connections with new immigrants as he recognizes that they represent a growing segment of the population; he wants to ensure they have chance to participate in the city’s development and growth.

He also mentioned he wants to strengthen the partnership between the city and the First Nation community.

Looking ahead, regardless of the outcome of his candidacy, Mercer sees North Battleford as his lifelong home. He plans to continue dedicating his time to community improvement and nurturing the next generation in the city he loves.

“Ultimately, we’re responsible for the good of one another,” said Mercer.

Municipal election day is Nov. 13. Other confirmed candidates include Alvin Baptiste, Rodney Fedler, Mercy George, Donald Meriam, Greg (Gregory) Lightfoot, Kent Lindgren, Ross MacAngus, Bill (Thomas) Ironstand, Alan Wiese, Dan Suberlak, Darryl Williams and Warren Williams.
