Local runners dash through finish line at cross country provincials
Over 30 athletes from the Battle West district were at the Carlton Trail Ski Club’s Dixon Hills near Humboldt this past weekend for High School Cross Country Provincials.
The athletes were split up into six different divisions; intermediate (under 15), junior (under 16) and senior (16 and over) for both boys and girls. The intermediate divisions ran three kilometres and the junior and senior divisions ran four kilometres.
In the intermediate girl’s division, it was Lily Holman (Luseland) who got first place and won the championship with a time of 11:55. Emma Harder (Maymont) also ran really well, grabbing fourth place in the division with a 12:38. Emery Beaudoin (Maymont) placed 45th with a 15:13, Surree Lehouillier (Spiritwood) finished 64th with a 16:18, Chanelle Kern (NBCHS) got 69th with a 16:26 and Taryn Pernitsky (Wilkie) and Emili Loiselle (Leoville) finished in the top 90.
For the intermediate boys, the best finisher was Matthew Heidel (NBCHS) who crossed the line in third with a time of 11:17. They were also represented by Ethan Gaboury (Spiritwood) who finished in 21st with a 12:06, Everett Germann (Macklin) and Jimmy Starchief (Unity) who both placed in the top 80, and Keller Nickell (Maymont), Liam Simonar (Spiritwood), Marshall Wismer (Cut Knife) and Jacob Konopelski (NBCHS) who all finished in the top 105 of the standings.
