Local runners dash through finish line at cross country provincials

Over 30 athletes from the Battle West district were at the Carlton Trail Ski Club’s Dixon Hills near Humboldt this past weekend for High School Cross Country Provincials.

The athletes were split up into six different divisions; intermediate (under 15), junior (under 16) and senior (16 and over) for both boys and girls. The intermediate divisions ran three kilometres and the junior and senior divisions ran four kilometres.

In the intermediate girl’s division, it was Lily Holman (Luseland) who got first place and won the championship with a time of 11:55. Emma Harder (Maymont) also ran really well, grabbing fourth place in the division with a 12:38. Emery Beaudoin (Maymont) placed 45th with a 15:13, Surree Lehouillier (Spiritwood) finished 64th with a 16:18, Chanelle Kern (NBCHS) got 69th with a 16:26 and Taryn Pernitsky (Wilkie) and Emili Loiselle (Leoville) finished in the top 90.

For the intermediate boys, the best finisher was Matthew Heidel (NBCHS) who crossed the line in third with a time of 11:17. They were also represented by Ethan Gaboury (Spiritwood) who finished in 21st with a 12:06, Everett Germann (Macklin) and Jimmy Starchief (Unity) who both placed in the top 80, and Keller Nickell (Maymont), Liam Simonar (Spiritwood), Marshall Wismer (Cut Knife) and Jacob Konopelski (NBCHS) who all finished in the top 105 of the standings.

The junior girls only had two athletes attend and that was Katarina Radchenko (NBCHS) who finished 47th overall with a 22:04 and Daelyn Turgeon (Spiritwood) who crossed the line 35th with a time of 20:59.

Representing the junior boys was Preston Knapton (Luseland) who finished 33rd with a 17:22, Kyler Domak (Maymont) who placed 50th with a time of 18:30, Ty Sieben (Macklin) who came in 52nd with a 18:41 and Chance Goller (Spiritwood), Rory Booth (Spiritwood) and David Sawatzky (Cut Knife) all finished in the top 90 of the standings.

In the senior girls division, Jorja Geddes (NBCHS) finished 54th with a 20:49, Jorja Gartner (Macklin) placed 84th with a time of 22:47 and Shelby Woodrow (NBCHS) came in 109th with a 30:56.

Then in the senior boys division, it was Alex Tkachuk (Spiritwood) who finished the best, getting 22nd with a time of 16:02. Jamal Starchief (Unity) finished 50th with a 17:39, Tristan Ball (NBCHS) came in 57th with 17:58, Zane Zipchen (Maymont) placed 64th with a 18:19 and Mikal Bird (NBCHS) finished in 84th with a time of 19:09. Caleb Moosomin, Mitchell Swiftwolfe, Keinan Bear and Sean Smith, all from Moosomin Cochin, finished near the bottom of the standings.

In the overall school standings, Maymont placed third in the 1A classification, Moosomin Cochin got 13th in the 2A classification, Spiritwood finished third in the 3A classification and North Battleford Comprehensive finished 21st in the 5A classification.
