North Stars rally in third period against Humboldt

Oct 12, 2024 | 4:38 AM

It came down to the wire, but the Battlefords North Stars were victorious last night in a high scoring game against former head coach Brayden Klimosko and the Humboldt Broncos.

The North Stars opened up the scoring with a goal from Nikita Ivashchenko, that was followed by another goal from Jackson Allan to take an early 2-0 lead.

Just after the mid-way point in the period though, the Broncos answer back with a goal from Gabriel Filion on the power play to make it 2-1.

Battlefords continued with lots of pressure throughout the period and was able to get another goal, again from Ivashchenko for his second of the game to go up 3-1.

As the period was coming to an end, Humboldt was able to find the back of the net once more as well to make 3-2, with a goal from Josh Sale.

In the second period, the scoring slowed down a little bit but it was the Broncos who got the first goal, coming from Jacob Strizzi for his seventh of the season to tie the game 3-3.

The North Stars were able to answer right back though with a power play goal from Josh Knittig, his first of the season to re-take the lead 4-3.

Most of the period continued on and neither team was able to generate anything as both teams had a strong defensive presence in the neutral zone.

Then it was Jacob Strizzi again for the Broncos with just over one minute left in the period, who struck the nylon and tied the game 4-4 going into third.

For the third period, it seemed like the North Stars were in control as they started off with a goal from Braden Nienaber to take back the lead 5-4 and were controlling most of the puck possession.

But in a flash of a moment, the Broncos got back-to-back power play goals from Josh Sale and Gabriel Filion that gave them the 6-5 lead nearing the half way mark of the final period.

For the next five minutes, the Broncos really applied the pressure, continuously sending the puck deep into the North Stars zone and making it difficult for Battlefords to do anything.

Then Captain of the North Stars, Jackson Allan, lit the spark that the team need with a goal right at the door step to tie the game back up 6-6.

Shortly after that, Battlefords scored again with a beautiful short side shot from Anthony Campbell to take a 7-6 lead.

Finally, to seal the deal Linken Fischer grabbed an empty net goal to conclude the game and the North Stars won 8-6.

The North Stars got out shot by the Broncos 33 to 30, went 2/4 on the power play and allowed Humboldt to score all three times on the penalty kill.

Matthew MacArthur stopped 27 out of 33 shots to help the team secure the win.

The North Stars take a trip to Humboldt today to face off against the Broncos again, this time at the Elgar Petersen Arena.

Listen to the game on 93.3 Beach Radio with pre-game show starting 6:30 p.m. and puck drop at 7:00 p.m.
