Rebecca Strong, awareness walk to highlight National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in La Ronge

Sep 27, 2024 | 3:06 PM

An awareness walk and musical event featuring Rebecca Strong will be held Monday in honour of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

The day will begin with an awareness walk starting at 11 a.m. between La Ronge’s downtown urban reserve to the old ball diamond in Morin’s Hill. Lunch will be served from noon to 1 p.m., which will be followed by storytelling , games and music until 5 p.m.

At that time, a traditional supper will be held until 6 p.m. All tri-community residents are invited to participate and those who do will receive a shirt, pen and lanyard.

At 7 p.m., the Kikinahk Friendship Centre will be hosting a free concert featuring Canada’s Got Talent winner and Black Lake Denesuline First Nation member Rebecca Strong. There are 300 tickets available for the event and they will be given on a first come, first serve basis. Tickets can be picked up prior to the event at Kikinahk.

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a direct response to Call to Action 80, from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which asked for a federal statutory day of commemoration. The occasion coincides with Orange Shirt Day and all Canadians are encouraged to wear orange on Sept. 30 to honour the thousands of survivors of residential schools.
