Getting ready for Nipawin and new signing from BCHL

Sep 24, 2024 | 1:41 PM

The Battlefords North Stars have only one game this week and it’s this Saturday, September 28 against the Nipawin Hawks at the Access Communications Centre.

The Hawks currently hold a 0-2 record after falling to Flin Flon Bombers 4-3 and the La Ronge Ice Wolves 3-2 this past weekend.

Last season, the North Stars took on the Hawks four times and ended up going 3-1 in those games. Then over the past five years, the North Stars have been quite successful against the Hawks holding a 10-2-0 record.

With it being a new season and both teams still not having a win, you can expect it to be an exciting and physical game. The Hawks will be led by fourth year vet and Nipawin local, Findlay Radloff, who has one goal and two assists so far this season. Last season, he led the Hawks in goals with 23 and is expected to do even better this year, especially with last year’s leading scorers, Braxton Buckberger and Evan Forrest aging out.

For the North Stars, it’s been the returning players Jackson Allan, Colton Getzlaff, Rylan Williams, Elijah Anderson and Gavin Granger who have been leading the charge. All grabbing two or more points in the first couple games, it’s expected that if they can continue with their performance and clean up the problem starts, they should hopefully be able to grab their first win this weekend.

The North Stars also announced the signing of a new player this past weekend, Josh Knitting, an ‘05 forward who was a draft pick for the team in 2020 and played for the Blackfalds Bulldogs of the AJHL/BCHL last season. While with the Bulldogs, Kniitig put up 6 goals and 8 assists for 14 points. Being a Saskatoon product, he played and was a captain for Saskatoon Blazers U18 AAA in 2022/23, where he had an outstanding season notching 25 goals and 25 assists for 50 points.

Head Coach and General Manager, Garry Childerhose said Knittig will be a great addition to the team as he is a talented player as well as a leader.

“He knows some of the guys on the team, he was the captain of the Saskatoon Blazers when they went to the Tellus Cup and he brings obviously a lot of talent on the ice, but also brings a lot of leadership off the ice. He is a 19-year-old forward that we’re excited to add and we’re looking forward to seeing him.”

Knittiq played this past weekend in both games against the Kindersley Klippers.

Puck drop against the Nipawin Hawks is 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 28 at the Access Communications Centre. Listen to the game on 93.3 Beach Radio with pre-game show starting at 7 p.m.
