AAA Sharks well represented at provincial showcase

This past weekend, the top 34 under 16 female hockey players in Saskatchewan gathered in Swift Current for the Sask First Showcase Tournament.

Started in 1988, the Sask First program was created to promote and develop quality players, coaches, trainers, officials and administrators. The showcase is attended by scouts from top leagues across the country and gives players a gateway to Hockey Canada’s Female High-Performance Program which includes the Canadian national teams.

Out of the 34 players there this past weekend, four of them were on the U16 AAA Battlefords Sharks last season. Savannah Mucha, Kahli Keen, Makayla Drabyk and Harbour Janz, who will be rookies on the U18 AAA Sharks this season, all had a great weekend representing the Sharks on team Sask White, playing in a total of three games.

Head Coach of the Sharks, Nolan Horbach, said that it was great to see players from the team get the opportunities and exposure they’ve worked hard for.

“I think it speaks volumes to their talent and the work they’ve put in to get where they are, and you know, I think it’s always nice to see them get rewarded and have the opportunity to play the best in their age group. I think from all accounts it was a great experience for them and obviously we’re extremely happy they got the opportunity and even more so to have them joining us this year.”

Horbach also said that he was very optimistic about this season with the Sharks.

“We’re extremely happy with how the recruiting went this year and I think we’re looking to build on an extremely positive year from last season as a new group. I know it’s brought a lot of excitement to the returning core and a lot of optimism about the season ahead.”

The U18 AAA Sharks are in midst of the preseason, already playing games in Lloydminster during the September long weekend. This weekend they make their way to Calgary to play in the Calgary Firestarter Tournament, where they will face off against some of the top teams from Western Canada. The regular season starts Sept. 28 with their home opener against Weyburn at the Battleford Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
