Some new information is being shared with respect to an incident that occurred last weekend at Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation and involved a man getting shot by police.

On Monday, RCMP shared they received a call early Sunday morning about an assault, and explained the suspect had confronted officers, who were forced to seek cover. The man then went inside the home, which had two adults and two kids inside.

The Saskatchewan RCMP Critical Incident Response Team was called in and a gun was shot during the response, with the suspect being injured. He died at the scene despite RCMP efforts to save his life.

According to a release on Tuesday from the Ministry of Justice and the Attorney General, the initial call for help involved a female being assaulted with a machete. She was later transported to hospital by EMS.

With respect to the confrontation with the suspect, the ministry explained initial members on scene had called for backup and contained the residence while awaiting additional resources.

When the residence was contained, the man exited and returned on several occasions and engaged in several verbal exchanges with police.

Additional resources arrived at the residence, and at approximately 8:38 a.m., a confrontation occurred between the man and police, during which one member of the RCMP’s Emergency Response Team (ERT) discharged a single round from a service firearm, striking the man.

Immediately following the notification, a Serious Incident Response Team consisting of the Civilian Executive Director and five SIRT investigators was deployed to begin their investigation. Their job will be to examine the conduct of police during this incident, including the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.

A community liaison will also be appointed and the RCMP will maintain responsibility for any investigation into the original incident.

A final report will be issued to the public within 90 days of the investigation ending.

RCMP have not identified the man who was shot but several sources have confirmed for paNOW it was Danny Knife. A video of the incident is also being shared on social media and community members are claiming Knife did not resist arrest.
