Two new group homes coming to Biggar

Sep 9, 2024 | 3:05 PM

Premier Scott Moe announced a partnership with Farm in the Dell and the Town of Biggar to develop two new group homes for 10 people with intellectual disabilities. Farm in the Dell will also operate a day program for 10 residents and seven other community members.

The Town of Biggar will make a contribution by giving a large portion of land to the project.

“We are committed to safe and affordable communities by ensuring that individuals with intellectual disabilities receive the necessary support for their physical, emotional, and social wellbeing, empowering them to live as independently as possible,” Premier Scott Moe said in a release.

The Ministry of Social Services will provide yearly operational funding, and Farm in the Dell and the local community will collaborate to raise funds for building two linked five-bedroom houses.

As per the release, The Government of Saskatchewan provides Farm in the Dell with $1.7 million in annual funding. The expansion to Biggar will bring the total to over $3.05 million.

Furthermore, the Biggar community has raised $500,000 in capital costs, and the Town of Biggar donated land and a road to the site at approximately $262,000.

“The Town of Biggar’s commitment of approximately 70 acres of land on our outskirts will provide both the unique rural living atmosphere and the amenities of our town’s many services and supports to the future residents of the new facility, as well as those accessing vocational day programs,” said Biggar Mayor Jim Rickwood.

With the commitment of land, services and financial contributions to this project, it truly is a community endeavour that has captured the philanthropic spirit of everyone who has made themselves familiar with the unique Farm in the Dell concept.”

Farm in the Dell is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities through residential, vocational, recreational, and community services in Saskatchewan. It operates group homes, a supported living program, and a farm-based vocational program near Aberdeen.

The Town of Biggar is located 95 kilometres south of North Battleford on Highway 4.
