City approves external lights for new outdoor rink

Aug 21, 2024 | 5:00 PM

An outdoor rink that was approved in the North Battleford 2024 budget and is currently under construction will be getting exterior lights added thanks to a switch in plans.

“The full amount of this project is $175,000 with PST included and this amount accounted for the preparation of the slab and the installation to the outdoor rink,” said Cheryl DeNeire, director of Parks and Recreation.

“It didn’t include lighting. The intent of the outdoor rink project is to install the main rink in 2024 and add-ons as needed in the future,” she said noting lighting was among those items as were a warming hut and player’s benches.

During the presentation to City Council on Monday night, she explained after reviewing the 2024 capital budget approvals, there was an opportunity to divert the rebuilding of an HVAC on the Don Ross Community Centre (earmarked in the budget at $17,000 plus PST) to the exterior lights to the rink this year as the HVAC units are part of a yearly maintenance program.

“It’s understood that this would be done over time and as needed,” DeNeire said.

“Currently the units are all working well, and a replacement has not been scheduled this year due to that fact.”

Effectively, the projects would be swapped around.

“By adding the exterior lights in 2024, the new rink will be playable in the evening hours as well as during the day,” said.

“The lights will also improve safety and visibility in the area.”

The rink will be between the skateboard park and the tennis courts at the Access Communications Centre, and the installation of the three lights including the bases and the trenching will be $14,500 plus taxes.

“There may be some minor adjustments required and the $17,000 including PST should cover the cost of the installation.”
