Air quality advisory issued for Battlefords

Aug 14, 2024 | 4:27 PM

Environment Canada issued an air quality advisory this afternoon, Aug. 14 due to smoke in the area from neighbouring wildfires.

The federal agency noted wildfire smoke can cause poor air quality and reduced visibility.

Its effects on air quality and visibility can span short distances and fluctuate hour to hour.

The primary health risk associated with wildfire smoke is the presence of fine particles, and everyone, regardless of age, can be at risk.

A media release from the agency says seniors, pregnant individuals, smokers, young children, outdoor workers, and those with health conditions are at higher risk and should avoid strenuous outdoor activities. You are encouraged to seek immediate medical assistance if you experience symptoms, and reduce or stop outdoor activities.

Environment Canada advises limiting outdoor time and keeping windows and doors closed during extreme heat and poor air quality.

According to local authorities’ guidance, you can use a high-quality air filter in your ventilation system and/or a certified portable air purifier to filter fine particles and protect the indoor air from wildfire smoke.

When outside you can wear a properly fitted NIOSH-certified N95 respirator mask or equivalent to reduce smoke particle exposure, but there is still a health risk.

Environment Canada also suggests people check in on others who may be more likely to be impacted by wildfire smoke and take care of their own mental health during this time.
