The Battlefords North Stars announced the hiring of a new assistant coach on Friday.

The Jr. A hockey club has named Battleford’s native Owen Lamb as their new assistant coach after Garry Childerhose was recently promoted to Head Coach and General Manager.

“Like many young hockey fans in our community, I grew up idolizing the North Stars,” said Lamb in a release. “Having had the privilege to play junior hockey here in my hometown, I now have the incredible opportunity to give back to both the organization and the community that shaped me. I’m eager to start this journey, connect with the players and staff, and work together to improve every day.”

Growing up as a fan of the Stars, Lamb also played for his hometown team from 2016-2019, appearing in 164 games and notching 44 goals and 47 assists. Following his time in the Black and Silver, he played for the University of Alberta Augustana in the ACAC where he spent five seasons upon graduating this past April.

“I am very proud to have not only one but two hometown guys leading our team this upcoming season,” said North Stars President Kyle Kellgren. “It will make history as the first ever hometown duo to coach for the Battlefords North Stars making this a very special time for not only our organization but for our community as a whole”

Childerhose was also excited to have Lamb join him behind the bench.

“He’s a hometown guy with tremendous character and is a proven winner,” he said. “He’s been a part of two Championships for the North Stars in 2017 and 2019 and I’m looking forward to working together and seeing his transition from player to coach.”

The North Stars are set to begin the season on Friday, Sept. 20 when they host the Kindersley Klippers at the Access Communications Centre.
