Senior Golf Provincials underway in Nipawin

Jul 23, 2024 | 3:23 PM

More than 100 senior golfers from across the province have descended on the northeast area for the 2024 Senior Golf Provincials.

Beginning at 7 a.m. Tuesday morning, the tournament kicked off at the Evergreen Golf Course in Nipawin.

“We’re very excited to be able to host this tournament. We’ve been working hard in preparing for it and our grounds crew has done a fantastic job getting the course ready to be a good challenge for our players. It looks like the weather is going to cooperate quite nicely, so we’re looking forward to a great week,” explained Club President Kevin Duchscherer.

“It’s a good time for our course to be busy, and in meeting with the players during the practice round yesterday, we had a lot of positive comments about the course as a lot of people are very eager to go.”

The event runs Tuesday through Thursday, with the playing of the Senior Women’s (50+) and Men’s (55+), as well as the Men’s Mid Masters (40+).

Four quota spots for nationals are available for the women’s side, which currently has 22 players competing, while eight quota spots are up for grabs on the men’s side, along with one for the Mid Masters, as 102 players compete.

One of those players is Duchscherer himself, as he told northeastNOW he would love to use the home course advantage, however, won’t likely be touching any hardware unless he’s passing it to the winners themselves.

“There are some hall of famers here,” he said. “I’m just in awe.”

Duchscherer teed off at 1:40 p.m.

The last tee time of each day will be at about 2 p.m., as winners won’t likely be known until 4:30 p.m. at the earliest on Thursday, with potential tiebreakers carried on until as late as 7 p.m.

This is the first time since 2019 that the Evergreen Golf Course will play host to a provincial championship.

The Evergreen hosted the junior championships in 2019, the men’s senior event has never been played in Nipawin, and the senior women’s tournament was played in Nipawin in 1995, when the championships were separate.
