Shelter pups looking to beat the heat; volunteers needed

As residents in the Battlefords are once again trying to find ways to beat the heat with the latest hot spell, dogs with names like Stubbs, Batty Koda and Charles B. Barkin need to cool off too.

“We have some puppies at the Western Development Museum for an event right now, but even with the heat people don’t want to be outside, so I don’t know how many people we will expect to actually come,” said Monika Sajtos, supervisor for Battlefords Humane Society.

This was the first time the shelter put a call out on social media for volunteers to come and give their hot dogs a bit of a reprieve from the heat as the building is old and stuffy.

“It’s really good for people to come and hope more people do come knowing that we’re struggling with heat,” she said.

“This building is ancient, like we’ll find dirt from 30 years ago.”

The staff is known to take dogs home for visits or playtimes but most visitors such as Ysabell Marquez and her family come out to visit.

“We just wanted to walk with them and just like, let them play outside,” she said, noting they also wanted to get some volunteer experience and saw the social media post Thursday morning.

Back at the shelter, Sajtos said they understand most work during the week.

“I do hope more people show up on the weekend, especially to take them for the full day,” she said.

“I definitely have high hopes for the weekend, especially now that people know we want them to take animals, they’ll probably be willing to take even puppies to the lake or something.”

Meanwhile, Sajtos said the building has about 30 fans on and even still, it isn’t enough, and volunteers would be a welcome addition.

“Maybe get them ice cream – vanilla of course.”
