If you build it: New announcers’ booth to be build by Battlefords Minor Softball

The future voices of Battlefords Minor Softball will have a new place to call home at the Marilyn O’Driscoll Field.

“They’re making a premier diamond at what is known as the (Battleford) Flats,” said Mayor Ames Leslie.

According to the report, the two-level booth, which has yet to be installed, will be 20 feet by 10 feet and 16 feet high. The top portion will be a dedicated booth for not only the league but also other organizations and the bottom level – requested by the league to be exclusively theirs for storage and sponsorship – will have a separate user agreement for insurance.

According to council, the costs of the booth will be paid by the organization before the town takes over ownership and future financial responsibilities.

“It’ll be appeasing to all the people down there that have wanted something like that for a lot of years,” said Councillor David George.

Councillor Kevin Russell agreed and added that the scoreboard is up and has already been used.

“It was cool, they hosted the U19 provincials this past weekend down there, so there were five teams from around the province,” he said.

In a follow up with Leslie, he said softball has never really had a premier place in the Battlefords.

“We have some of the best teams in this province and some of the best youth athletes in the fame of softball and it just gives them another stadium to play in, to just add that extra level, maybe attracts more players to come here,” he said.

The mayor said the board, committee, volunteers and the fundraisers “do a great job.”

“We are grateful for anytime residents and groups want to do their part to beautify our community and we’ll look to support them when they need some and ask for some.”
