HWY 4 Compare

Deadly roads: how does HYW 4 compare to some other highways in the province?

Jul 17, 2024 | 6:57 PM

The highway at the centre of the two fatal accidents a couple weeks ago is not among the deadliest according to an RCMP analysis.

For the last five years, there have been 368 fatal collisions on highways and municipal roads with the jurisdiction of Saskatchewan RCMP.

HWY 4, the road that saw five people die in a single afternoon around the Battlefords, when compared to eight other similar highways is listed sixth.

In a ten-year timespan, there have been 36 fatal accidents on HWY 4 in which 48 people died. Of those 36 fatal collisions, 13 happened around the Battlefords area.

According to the Ministry of Highways, the last six years have seen “nearly $30 million in capital and safety improvements on Highway 4 north and south of the Battlefords.”

Among the investments was repaving the area north of the city and four passing lanes on the stretch that leads to Cochin – the area where the first accident happened.

According to the RCMP, the top two fatal roads in the province are the Trans Canada mainland route (HYW 1) and the Yellowhead (HWY 16) with 28 and 21 fatalities respectively in the last five years to date. The MOH said in an email that they are “in the planning stage of a proposed eight kilometres of highway twinning on Highway 4, north of North Battleford,” along with two-year construction currently being planned for right-turn lanes in Battleford on HWY 4.

The RCMP analysis showed Highways 2, 11 and 3 follow closely behind the roads in the top slots and Highways 7 and 9 bring in the rear with 10 fatal collisions each.

Meanwhile, the investigation into the cause of the July., 5 accidents remains ongoing.
