Canada Day celebration plans across north central Sask

Canada’s national holiday is celebrated on July 1.

It’s an opportunity for Canadians across the country and around the world show pride in their history, culture and achievements. Canada Day has been celebrated since 1868 with many festivities held across the nation. Here is a look at what’s happening across north central Saskatchewan this year.

Prince Albert

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #2 is bringing Canada Day celebrations to Kinsmen Park. Food booths, a ball tournament, Bingo, entertainment and more will start at 11 a.m. Meanwhile, the Prince Albert Multicultural Council will start their entertainment on the riverbank at 5 p.m. with several acts including performances by Mariachi Latino Band from Regina and Iron Eagle Drum & Dance Group. The evening will end with a fireworks display.

Canada Day celebrations actually kick off on June 29 within Prince Albert National Park.

The Waskesiu Recreation Association is hosting a party on Saturday night at Terrace Gardens. Guests are invited to ‘come dressed in your best red and white and dance the night away.’ On Sunday, anyone participating in the annual parade is invited to decorate their bike on the WRA grounds from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. A pancake breakfast on Canada Day begins at 8 a.m. at the Waskesiu Community Hall. The parade starts at noon at the Beaver Glen entrance. A flag raising and free cupcakes will be offered behind the Visitor Centre from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Face painting, a Lego cast, beer gardens with live music and food truck vendors will follow.

Candle Lake

The Resort Village of Candle Lake said Canada Day is a highly celebrated holiday within the community that starts with the annual parade. It travels down Highway 265 and through the resort village with floats, first responder vehicles and decorated golf carts starting at 11 a.m. Celebration activities including inflatable obstacle courses, a climbing wall, balloon artists and various vendors will take place at the RVCL Recreation Grounds starting at noon and a fireworks display is scheduled off of Waskateena Beach at dusk.

North Battleford

On Monday, offices and facilities are going to be closed for Canada Day, but North Battleford’s Parks and Recreation Department is going to have a full day of free programming starting at 11 a.m. A Facebook post on the city’s page said indoor celebrations are planned in the Access Communications Centre, but if its nice, may be moved outside to Centennial Park. A fireworks display is tentatively scheduled for 10:45 p.m. at King Hill.

Meadow Lake Provincial Park

Sask Parks is hosting a full day of summer fun, games, activities and a sweet treat for Canada Day on Grieg Lake beach. The event is free with a valid park entry permit. Starting at 11 a.m. there will be a ‘Cool Down Zone’ with games and bubbles, face painting, cupcakes from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. and an art hour starting at 3 p.m. where participants can make a Canada Day campsite ornament – a Canada-themed wind sock.

Nipawin

The Nipawin Living Forestry Museum is inviting the public out on July 1 for a day of threshing and rope making demonstrations among others. There will also be clay over baked bread for sale, a pie booth, free Canada birthday cake and music. The event opens at 9 a.m. with food booths. A flag raising will take place at 10 a.m. and the entertainment begins shortly after. Also on demonstration will be the museum’s shingle mill. The Pool at Central Park in Nipawin will celebrate Canada Day from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday with games, prizes and cupcakes.

Melfort

People will be ready to ‘Party in the Park’ in Melfort. The public is invited to Spruce Haven park from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on July 1 for an opening ceremonies hosted by the Melfort Legion Color Parade and delegates. Live music will ensue along with entertainment for kids including bouncy castles, sparkle tattoos, and scavenger hunts among other events. Melfort Wood Carvers willl be on location and the museum will be open for tours until 4 p.m. Residents are also being encouraged to take a drive using the Quilt Parade Map to take in all the handmade treasures.

Tisdale

In Tisdale, celebrations are taking place at the local museum from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is by donation. There will be a bouncy castle village with a velcro wall, free mini golf, concession, live music, cake and a raffle draw.

Humboldt

The ‘Summer Sizzler’ event in Humboldt has plenty of activities lined up for the long weekend. The public can enjoy a Petting Zoo from Houligan Acres at the Uniplex Grounds from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, June 28. Canuck Amusement’s Midway is open from 3 p.m. until 10 p.m. On Saturday, there will be a pancake breakfast at Civic Park, a parade at 9:30 a.m. followed by free cupcakes and speeches at the Uniplex grounds. Boldt Con – Humboldt’s Comic Con takes place from noon to 6 p.m. in the Uniplex Convention Centre. The midway will be open until 11 p.m. and there is a fireworks show on the Uniplex grounds at dusk.

La Ronge

Patterson Park in La Ronge will host a family festival July 1 starting with a parade at 11 a.m. marshaled by La Ronge Regional Fire/Rescue Services. The day includes a puppet show, magic, games, a powwow dance, and activities all day at the Northern Active Living library. A fireworks display is scheduled for 10:45 p.m. in Patterson Park.
