Start of $28 million Highway 102 upgrade delayed

The start of a $28 million project to enhance Highway 102 between La Ronge and Sucker River has been delayed.

That’s according to an email from the Ministry of Highways to larongeNOW, which states the project was unable to start as early as anticipated because the contractor has other projects on the go.

The email said the situation is not uncommon for Saskatchewan’s 26,000 km provincial highway network, which is the largest in Canada on a per capita basis.

“An estimated $28 million project to improve about 25 kilometers of Highway 102 north of La Ronge and an access road at Sucker River remains on target to be completed by the end of 2025,” the email read.

“Work continues to be expected to begin this year and should see work related to tree clearing and culvert installations necessary for the project begin in September”

Additional gravel crushing for the Highway 102 project will occur in the fall of 2024. Work on Highway 102 to reinforce the subgrade beneath the road’s surface, followed by paving with asphalt, is expected to begin in 2025 with completion later that same year.

In the meantime, the Ministry of Highways will continue regular maintenance on Highway 102, which will include machine and hand-patching of potholes.

Motorists are reminded to slow down and obey all signage in work zones.

When the project was announced in November 2023, both La Ronge Mayor Joe Hordyski and Lac La Ronge Indian Band Coun. Devin Bernatchez expressed excitement when asked about their reaction to the announcement.
