Fire investigators find body in burned out home

Jun 18, 2024 | 11:25 AM

Editors note: This story was edited at 1:30 p.m. on June 18 to clarify Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes is not currently investigating this fire, as previously reported.

North Battleford firefighters have located human remains inside of a home that burned in the 900 block of 105 Street North.

The fire started Saturday night, but the remains were not discovered until Monday.

The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency and the Saskatchewan Coroner’s Service are now investigating the incident to determine both the cause of the individual’s death and the fire. Battlefords RCMP continue to monitor and will take over the investigation only if it is determined that the death was criminal in nature.

A male in the residence at the time of the fire was transported to hospital for cuts and lacerations from glass; he exited the home from a second storey window.

The burned residence has previous ties to criminal activity as it was connected to Mavis Takakenew who received an 18-month sentence for her role in the 2019 death of Laverdiere. Court documents cited the house on 105th Street North as one of three homes where Laverdiere was assaulted and tortured.
