Saskatchewan Speaker calls meeting to get to bottom of gun incident and allegations

Jun 14, 2024 | 5:21 PM

Saskatchewan’s legislative Speaker says a meeting he called is the only avenue to get to the bottom of gun allegations surrounding a cabinet minister.

Randy Weekes says the house services committee, which he chairs, is to convene next week so it can respond to a request from the Opposition NDP to investigate Jeremy Harrison bringing a gun into the legislature eight years ago.

Weekes says concerns about the incident, and allegations Harrison may have carried a gun in the building on another occasion, need to be independently looked at.

The committee is made up of four governing Saskatchewan Party members, three from the NDP and Weekes.

It needs five members in attendance for the NDP to move its motion for an investigation.

Harrison has said there was only one time he brought a gun into the legislature, which he admitted to doing after initially denying it.
