Civilian motorist aids police by ramming suspect vehicle

May 31, 2024 | 4:42 PM

A dangerous situation for RCMP on Hwy 40 near Neilburg, SK Thursday could have ended much worse had it not been for the help of a civilian.

The passing motorist disabled a vehicle that had been striking a police cruiser with an officer still inside.

The incident started when a Saskatchewan RCMP Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan (CTSS) officer was conducting patrols. The officer saw a speeding vehicle coming down the highway and tried to conduct a traffic stop. The driver didn’t comply and instead stopped in the middle of the highway and reversed striking the police vehicle. Police said the suspect vehicle then drove forward, turned around, and struck the police vehicle head on twice causing heavy damage.

A civilian driving by rammed and disabled the suspect vehicle to prevent it from striking the police cruiser again. A man and a woman then jumped out of the suspect vehicle and fled on foot into a wooded area.

The officer driving the police vehicle was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Several RCMP resources from Cut Knife, Maidstone and Unity detachments came to the scene to help search for the suspects. So did the Lloydminster RCMP Police Dog Service. The Remote Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) was also used.

A female suspect was found and arrested, but the male suspect is still at large.

Police continue to investigation and are asking anyone with information about the identity or location of the suspect to report it immediately by calling 310-RCMP or submitting information anonymously through Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or www.saskcrimestoppers.com

The suspect is believed to be in his mid 30s to 40s, approximately 6’ tall, 180 to 190 lbs, with black hair. He was wearing a black or blue t-shirt, dark coloured ball cap, blue jeans, white running shoes and a grey or black medical mask or bandana.
