NBFD gearing up to host 74th annual fire chiefs conference May 30-June 1

May 25, 2024 | 8:00 AM

Fire talk is about to be the topic of conversation in the Battlefords.

The 74th annual Saskatchewan Association of Fire Chiefs (SAFC) conference will bring chiefs from all over the province for three days of visiting, learning, and checking out the latest apparatus.

“We provide some good education for chiefs so that they’re aware of upcoming issues that may affect their departments because as things are changing and evolving, in the fire service, we’re dealing with more social problems and things that weren’t necessarily within the realm of the fire department,” said Lindsay Holm, chief of North Battleford Fire Department.

“We’re finding now, provincially that that’s becoming a broader issue for the fire service.”

The conference, titled ‘Coping with Social, Economic, and Legislative Change’ – will be held at the InnovationPlex from May. 30 to June. 1 and bring out vendors, guests and 300 members to the event that will include talks on labour relations, a trade show, annual general meeting and Dr. Jody Carrington will deliver the Keynote address.

“The City of North Battleford has worked hard at changing some of its bylaws to try to deal with some of the issues that we’re faced with as a community,” he said.

Meanwhile, for the first time, the conference will feature a course on budgeting to help smaller departments deal with issues.

“The fire apparatus that you see behind me here, that stuff is becoming more and more expensive everyday – the costs on those are just skyrocketing,” Holm said.

“I think it’s going to be a great weekend; it’s going to be a lot of work and preparation and we’re almost there,” he said.
