Normalization of sports gambling harmful to mental health, CPA says
A seemingly constant presence of advertisements normalizing sports gambling in Canada has sparked a growing opposition of people who find them harmful, with the movement reaching the Canadian Senate.
In a news release Tuesday, the Canadian Psychological Association (SPA) offered its support to Bill S-269, which calls “…for the development of a national framework to regulate advertising for sports betting in Canada…” according to the Parliament of Canada.
“We are in the middle of a real mental health crisis,” said Steve Joordens, a CPA member and psychology professor at the University of Toronto. “We just can’t keep up on the treatment side, so we’re focusing a lot more on the prevention side…trying to help people not fall into these issues.”
“When it comes to the marketing of gambling, that’s really offensive if you are on the prevention side of mental health because it’s kind of anti-prevention. It’s really pushing people into a behaviour that we know for many will lead to a lot of trouble for them.”
