City purchases relatively new ice plant equipment for arenas

There will be new options for the city’s arenas if it needs help with its ice plants.

The majority of North Battleford city council agreed to purchase the mostly new ice plant equipment on offer, as recommended by administration.

“It’s fairly new and it’s offered at a good price,” Mayor David Gillan said. “We can use it as spare parts in our existing ice plants, or we can store it for the potential as we renovate or build something new.”

The equipment mainly consists of chiller, a VFD (variable frequency drive) and a new compressor. The city has an opportunity to purchase the equipment through Canadian Climate Refrigeration.

Gillan noted the price is a good deal. The equipment is being taken out of another facility in the province because that venue wanted to change their technology. But it’s still relatively new equipment, and it’s compatible with the city’s equipment. It’s also only a couple of years old.

“It’s fairly new equipment, and we’re trying to save funds for the taxpayer,” Gillan said. “There’s two options here: We can use it as spare parts because it’s compatible for what we have. Or, it will store well. There’s no problem with storing it. As long as it’s in a dry place, and well looked after, it will be fine.”

The city said brand new equivalent equipment would cost about $235,000. With the potential construction of a new arena, this equipment could be installed in that facility, and it should be able to handle any dual rink sheets the city might consider in the future.

Council authorized administration to purchase the refrigeration equipment for up to $75,000, plus PST of $4,500, from Canadian Climate Refrigeration. They also advised administration to store the equipment safely until it’s needed.
