Lloyd Ex gears up for 2024 4-H Expo

May 12, 2024 | 12:00 PM

Youth in area 4-H clubs will be showing their work at the upcoming Lloydminster Agricultural Exhibition Association 4-H Expo Program.

The event runs Saturday, June 1 to Monday, June 3 at the Lloydminster Exhibition grounds, between three of the main buildings, and in the outdoor riding arenas as well.

The regional 4-H show brings together more than 250 4-H members to showcase their projects for the year. These include heifer, steer, cow/calf, light horses, and multi-projects.

“There’ll be lots of different projects,” said Lloyd Ex General Manager Jackie Tomayer. “We’ll be on-site between Saturday and Monday.

She mentioned the multi-projects range from everything from archery to mechanics, to canine, sheep, and lamb, all sorts of different projects.

One of the highlights of the event will be the Market Lamb Sale and the Steer Sale on Monday, starting at 2 p.m.

About 20 different 4-H clubs in the Lloydminster area will take part in the activities, including those from the Meadow Lake area.

“The members have been working really hard since last fall with their projects, no matter what that project might be, to learn the skills to compete and to groom and to feed, all the skills it takes to work with their projects, whether that is a canine animal or a steer,” Tomayer said. “The weekend [of the event] is where they get to come and show off all those things they’ve learned that the leaders have taught them about grooming, feeding, handling, showing, and that sort of thing.”

Some of the showstoppers at the event include a dog agility course, which will be fun to take in.

“We have a very robust canine entry,” Tomayer said. “We’re looking forward to seeing how those members have worked through the winter with their side kicks, and what they are going to show us on the agility course.”

The grand opening ceremonies for the 4-H Expo event take place on the Sunday. This year’s theme is “4-H is Fun.”

“We’re anticipating a very fun weekend,” Tomayer said.

The event is free to attend, with the exception of the meals.

“We encourage everyone to come out and see, and if you want a nice home-grown raised market lamb or steer, then please come to the sale on Monday,” Tomayer said. “Maybe buying a whole steer is too much for your family, but if three or four families get together and split it, it supports the kids that have worked really hard on their projects, and it fills your freezer as well.”
