Sunny and warm

Spring showers giving way to some summer-like temperatures

May 8, 2024 | 1:37 PM

After some much-needed precipitation, the province will see a stretch of warm, dry weather.

The month of May brought cool, wet, windy conditions to Saskatchewan, but Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Terri Lang told northeastNOW a large ridge of high pressure is moving in to take its place.

“We’re looking for sunny skies into…certainly, through the weekend,” explained Lang. “Dry conditions and temperatures reaching into the mid-to-high 20’s.”

Those high temperatures are well above the average high of 16 for this time of year.

“To see temperature forecasts for highs around 28 degrees is a little bit of a shocker,” said Lang. The sunshine and heat will lead to some high UV index readings, so Lang reminds everyone to put on plenty of sunscreen and keep yourself hydrated.

The hottest day is forecast for Saturday, with Melfort and the northeast reaching around 28 degrees, Prince Albert 27, and North Battleford and Meadow Lake 25. La Ronge should be around 20 degrees on Friday and Saturday.

The warm, dry stretch will allow people to do some yard work or gardening and could allow farmers to get out into the field. The conditions this spring have been more typical of springs past, according to Lang.

“We haven’t had typical springs the last couple of years, so it’s actually kind of nice to see the typical spring with the highs and the lows and the rain and the snow and all that kind of stuff that’s supposed to go along with how it’s supposed to be.”

Lang said a system early next week could bring showers or thunderstorms, adding May is expected to be warmer than average.
