Conservation officer traffic stop leads to trafficking bust near Spiritwood

A conservation officer who pulled over a vehicle in Leoville on Tuesday resulted in a wanted man in jail along with drugs and weapons off the street.

Spiritwood RCMP were called by the Conservation Officer after they learned that the driver of a vehicle they had pulled over was wanted for missing a court appearance.

While RCMP were investigating, they found 43 grams of crack cocaine, 52 grams of methamphetamine, bear spray, brass knuckles, an imitation gun, cash and other items associated with drug trafficking.

Two men from Pelican Lake First Nation were arrested an charged.

Mathew Whitsone, 30, and Byron Peekeekoot, 40, will be in Spiritwood Provincial Court on June 25 on trafficking and weapons charges.

Whitstone has an additional charge of failing to comply with release conditions and Peekeekoot was also charged with having a gun contrary to an order.
