Battlefords duo win provincial gold with 16U Sask Stealth

Just a year after taking home a silver medal as teammates at the 2023 Best of the West volleyball championship in Calgary, the Battlefords dynamic duo of Jadyn Bugg and Daley Vany have now claimed provincial gold with the 16U Sask Stealth, in Saskatoon.

The Stealth lost just a single set in six matches on their way to the championship, dominating pool play with straight-sets victories over Saskatoon’s Huskie Elite (25-13, 25-16), Lloydminster’s Momentum Black (25-16, 25-16), Regina’s Queen City Volleyball Club Elite (27-25, 25-20), and Lanigan (25-15, 25-13), to earn a bye to the semi-finals of the playoff rounds.

In the semis, the team then bounced back from a 24-20 loss in their first set against Swift Current’s Jr. Sundogs to take two-straight, 25-19 and 15-10, and punch their ticket to the finals.

Facing off with Saskatoon’s Huskie Premier team for the provincial championship, the Stealth again claimed a straight-sets win (26-24, 25-18) to clinch the provincial gold.

“It was crazy,” Vany said of the win. “We all went into it really believing we could do this and pushed through, so when we won, we all were really excited and some of the girls on the team were crying because it’s their first-ever provincial championship win.

“My mom and dad came and watched, my sister and her fiancé came, and my grandpa came and watched, so it was really nice having them all there,” Vany added. “They’re so supportive and they care about everything towards my volleyball [pursuits].”

She said beating the same Huskies team that beat them last year also made the run especially rewarding.

Jadyn Bugg – whose sister Taylor was also in action nearby in Warman, taking home a provincial silver with the 18U Stealth – also got to share the experience of winning the provincial title with family in attendance throughout the tournament.

“My whole family was there, along with some family friends who came to watch, and with my sister’s tournament nearby, I got to watch hers as well,” Bugg said. “As soon as the game ended when they all came down, I was hugging my mom and my dad and the family friends that came and thanking them for coming.”

Bugg said the provincial title was made possible by everyone on the team playing their part and doing whatever was required to help the team win.

“Our key was probably just knowing that we can do it and using all of our players to the best of our ability,” she said. “We were really excited because for the Sask Cups leading up, we were coming out first and we really wanted to keep that record going into provincials, so we really wanted to win it.”

With the provincial championship, the 16U Stealth will now advance to nationals May 24-26 in Edmonton.
