MP Gary Vidal announces he won’t seek re-election

Apr 23, 2024 | 4:08 PM

Desnethé-Missinippi-Churchill River MP Gary Vidal announced he won’t be seeking re-election in the next federal election.

Vidal explained why he won’t be running in the Desnethé-Missinippi-Churchill River riding.

“I know some may be asking the reasons for this decision, so I offer the following: The boundaries of the Desnethé–Missinippi–Churchill River riding that I have served since October 21, 2019 are changing very drastically for the next election,” he said in a statement today. “Though it is not a legal requirement that a Member of Parliament live in the riding they serve, for me it is personal requirement and one that I believe in very strongly.”

He added he will not live in the new riding of Desnethé-Missinippi-Churchill River.

He also noted that the federal Conservative Party has decided there will not be an open nomination to determine who will be on the ballot for the party in the new riding that he will reside in – Battlefords-Lloydminster-Meadow Lake.

“Although this is not the expected outcome I anticipated, circumstances beyond the control of myself and my team have dictated that I move on after the next election,” Vidal said. “Serving as a Member of Parliament for an incredible riding has been an honour and a privilege. I have made friends and built authentic relationships with many people that I will cherish for the rest of my life.

“I am very proud of the work my team and I have done,” he added. “We have accomplished many positive things for the people of Desnethé–Missinippi–Churchill River, and we will continue to do that work until the next election. I will forever be grateful to those who have contributed to my journey. I say a sincere thank you to each and everyone of you.”
