Clean-up Battleford; celebrate Earth Day

Apr 5, 2024 | 1:00 PM

Now that the snow is melting, the streets are looking a little worse for wear. To help celebrate the new season, the Town of Battleford is organizing an Earth Day Community Clean-Up.

“It’s just a way, for me personally, to get people out in the community, get seeing each other again and then doing something together that is meaningful to all of us,” said Gwenda Spence, town receptionist who takes on event posting.

The inaugural event will be held on Mon., Apr. 22 and according to Jordan Schechtel, manager of Parks and Recreation, businesses, local community groups and schools have all been invited to take part.

“Anybody that wants to participate, they can get supplies at town hall, so garbage bags and gloves or you can just go out in your own neighborhood and pick garbage with your own supplies,” he said.

The work area will be broken up into zones but there isn’t a set itinerary, and participants can work as they choose.

“We’ll have different drop off locations and a map of where people can drop off that litter and then basically our department of public works will come by at the end of the day and pick up that and haul it away.”

According to Spence, the day is to celebrate the protection of the environment.

“The more people you can get out there to help, it just…brings the community together,” she said.

According to the town’s website, participants may pick up supplies at either the town hall or the Parks office from April. 15 to 19, the event day will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., and while individuals don’t need to register, the staff recommend that groups do.

While there isn’t a social component featuring lunch or snacks, Schechtel said that may be considered for the future.

“For this year, we just wanted to get it going and see how it goes,” he said.

“It’s very informal this year.”
